Longtime local music scene fixture Ali Holder joins me in studio to discuss depression, song writing, boundaries, and authenticity.

Ali told Wide Open Country that “Mental health is something that has a huge place in my life. As someone who battles both depression and anxiety, I am intimate with the incredible stigma of mental illness,” She continues “Due to my privilege, I believe it’s my responsibility to try and help provide support to others with mental illness. To bring awareness to mental health. To de-stigmatize it. To help others advocate for themselves. To help others feel less alone.”

Across her latest record, Uncomfortable Truths, singer-songwriter Ali Holder exposes every raw nerve of her life. Speak 3 and Speak 4 are among her most profound and intimate confessions. Ali puts it all on the table as she shares her inspiration and experience in writing many of her songs, including one of my favorites, The Only Thing on her 2013 debut album, In Preparation for Saturn’s Return.

Ali Holder has chosen to speak truth to her life, even when those moments don’t reflect on her decisions as favorably as she may like.
